Security advice for Spanish airports
Spanish airports have excellent security measures, comparable with any other airport in the world. You may feel though, on arrival that the airports often appear to be in chaos. Indeed, this couldn't be further from the truth. Spanish airports are generally calm (if not a little noisy). Things generally run very smoothly and proceedures are well organised.
Hand baggage at the departure lounge
All hand baggage is XRayed as you enter the departure area and you must walk through the metal detectors. Removing your shoes and belts is normal practice. Frisk searches are performed at random. Women are only frisked by female security guards. Hand held metal detectors are also used.
You must never leave your baggage unattended as it will cause a security alarm and will almost certainly be destroyed. You may also face a hefty fine for wasting police time.
Things you cannot carry onboard the aircraft
This may seem obvious but you would be surprised how many people ignore these warnings and fall foul at the airport.
