Driving in Fuerteventura

You will have no difficulty hiring a car in Fuerteventura and there is no doubt that it is the best way to explore the island. Being such a small island, you could see most places over 3-5 days.

Driving in Fuerteventura is easy, especially compared to the Spanish mainland. The roads around the island are of a very high standard. Many of them are just a few years old and even now, new roads are underway. There are several major highways that run round the island. These are easy to access and make for comfortable driving.

As you drive inland, the roads are still of a very good quality, even in the smallest of villages. The only bad road we found was the road to Puerto de la Cruz in the south. This is an unpaved road that leads to the lighthouse. It is useable, with caution and runs for about 19km. We would not advise using it in the rain.

Parking in Fuerteventura
Other than in the major towns such as Puerto del Rosario, most parking in Fuerteventura is free and ample. Paid for parking spaces are marked in blue paint and are meter operated.

Petrol stations in Fuerteventura
Most of the major highways have petrol stations and some minor towns have them. Very few of the villages have them.

Driving manners
We found that the majority of drivers in Fuerteventura were very pleasant and very patient. The only hazards being unconfident foreign tourists travelling too slow.
