Behind the quaint port and marina area, Luarca has a surprisingly large town area. The maze of narrow streets are lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. The town seems virtually self-sufficient.
You will find banks, a post office and a useful tourist information centre. The river (Rio Negro) runs through the centre of town and is picturesque, especially in full sun.
Luarca has a unique maritime museum where for 4 euros (adults) you can see one of the largest squids in the world.Ask for the Centro del Calamar Gigante. It can be found close to the port. |

Camping in Luarca
Although motorhomes and caravans are not permitted to park within the village confines, there are several campsites within the local area. A few kilometers from Luarca is a quaint campsite with views to die for. We stayed at the Camping Tauran in July 2013. The campsite occulies a prime location overlooking the sea from a steep cliff. Of medium size, it offers all you need at an affordable price.20.50 euros for one night, motorhome with two people and electric hookup. Don't be put off by the narrow country lane that leads to the site. It is passable and well worth the effort. More info at: www.campingtauran.com
Camping Tauran has a swimming pool, bar and cafe as well as free wifi. There are toilets, showers and washing facilities. Pitches are relatively level. The staff speak English and offer a warm welcome. The campsite also offer bungalow holidays in beautifully crafted log cabins.
It is possible to walk to the village of Luarca and the beaches by means of a path that winds its way down the cliffs. It's about a 25 minute walk. You will need stout walking shoes. |

The beaches in Luarca
Luarca has two beaches of reasonable quality, both with rocky features and interesting pools when the tide is out. One of the beaches is protected by a harbour wall making it particularly safe for families and small children. Each beach has a small bar, showers and toilets. |

The port are in Luarca
As you sit in one of the many bars facing the port and marina, Luarca has a feeling that could be likened to St.Ives or any other Cornish fishing port, complete with seagulls overhead. It has a tranquil atmosphere. Many of the vessels are smallfishing boats that still catch fish daily to satisfy the demands of local restaurants.
Pictured right is the marina area with the view from a street bar.
