History of Santander Airport

The new Parayas airport was opened in September 1953, replacing a small airfield nearby. A few years later in 1959 the airport was flooded and severely damaged. A new dyke and flood defences were built. It became known as Santander Airport in 1965 and over the next few years it grew in popularity. So much so that by 1973 the airport was struggling to cope. The runway was extended and new terminal buildings were constructed. On the 8th August 1977, the new, improved airport opened and started trading.

Taxis at Santander Airport are located at the arrivals terminal. The cost to the city centre is around 20 Euros. Trains do not run to Santander Airport but there is a central train station in the city, run by RENFE.

Buses stop outside the arrivals terminal. The bus to and from Santander city runs every 30 minutes and the journey takes 15 minutes. Alsa run bus services from Santander Airport to many cities in northern Spain. Tickets must be purchased beforehand.
