Guide to the Costa Tropical in Spain

Hotelopia has special offers and great prices on Hotels in the Costa Tropical

The Costa Tropical is the coast of Granada. The main towns of Costa Tropical are: Motril, Almunecar and Salobreña, although there are other towns that are equally as important as tourist destinations. This privileged part of Andalusia  has learned how to preserve it's beauty and restrict the massive building boom.

It is predicted that over the next ten years, the coastline will continue to expand and improve.

This region of Spain is Europe's only sub tropic region and is sheltered from the worst influences of the European winters by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Africa to the south helps dull the harsh effects of both Mediterranean and Atlantic weather, generating warm, southerly breezes. There is none of the stifling humidity common to the tropics. The result of this is a remarkably warm, pleasant climate with little rain and over 320 days of sunshine a year.  In winter temperatures average a pleasant 18 degrees centigrade. During summer, this average rises to about 25 degrees with midday temperatures often well into the 30's. In July and August it is often in the 40's.

The coast lies at the foot of the mountain range La Contraviesa, which touches upon the province of Granada, the road runs parallel to the shore, bordering the beaches and the foothills that make for a gently winding road. La Rábita is an ideal stopping point: an old fishing village, well protected by its small fortress and surrounded by farmland.  In Castell de Ferro (21 kilometres from La Rábita) you will find a small village set at the foot of a hill: a watchtower reminds us of the threat of piracy, as in many other parts of the coast. The beaches of Poniente, Puerto and Azucenas shape the coast of Motril and are host to a well-known tourist centre. Salobreña is just seven kilometres away. The village, with its narrow, white streets, set at the foot of a hill topped by an Arab castle, is a must. The view from the old fortress stretches over the fertile plain of Guadalfeo, carpeted with sugarcane plantations, as far as Sierra Nevada. Also of great interest is Almuñécar (17 kilometres away), another village crowned by a Muslim castle.
