Places in Spain - Castilla y Leon

The ancient kingdom of Leon which was eventually annexed to Castile embraced three cities, Salamanca, Zamora and the provincial capital of Leon. Today the region is known for its many castles and monuments. The region is located in north central Iberia and is the largest region of Spain. Spain owes much to Leon and Castile for forging the regions into a unified Spain. Old Castile once held power that has long since shifted to Madrid. The region holds many surprises and offers excellent, unspoilt countryside and natural parks.

Places worth a visit include; Burgos , Salamanca and Valladolid

Whilst in the region, one place you must se is Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled town dating from Roman times. The area is known for its 16th and 17th century town houses, built by the conquistadors, founded in the 12th century and designated a national monument. You can wander through the streets admiring the many churches and mansions. The major attraction of the city being the Cathedral, Santa Maria.
