This
town
is
rich
in
monuments
including
St.
Dominic's
Church,
The
Holy
Cathedral
Church,
featuring
a
painting
by
Velazquez
and
the
Church
of
Santiago
that
was
originally
a
mosque.
There
are
also
several
important
palaces.
Tabarca
Three
miles
off
the
Cape
of
Santa
Pola
is the
only
inhabited
island
in the
community
of
Valencia,
declared
a
Maritime
Reserve
in
1986.
It can
be
visited
throughout
the
year
by
boat
which
takes
about
20
minutes.
In the
16th
and
17th
centuries
it was
the
outpost
for
pirates
that
raided
the
coastal
communities
and in
the
18th
century,
King
Carlos
III
ordered
a
settlement
to be
built
to
house
300
Italian
refugees.
On the
island,
you
must
visit
the
18th
century
fortress,
the
Baroque
style
church,
the
old
lighthouse
and
the
St.
Jose
fortified
tower
.
