In 1325 a farmer is reported to have found a statue of the Virgin Mary, buried in one of his fields. It is claimed that the statue was carved by St.Luke himself. The visitors flocked from all over to see the statue and a shrine was built around it. The monastery grew in size and popularity. The Monastery at Guadalupe is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Idealspain visit the monastery in September 2010; report and video here. |

St. John the Baptist Hospital
Dating from the 16th century and close to the monastery, the hospital has become part of the parador. The patio inside the building is of particular interest due to the arches it includes. |

Pictured right is the fountain in the centre of Plaza Mayor where you can fill your water bottles with the fresh, cold spring water.
There's no parking in the Plaza Mayor and this is where most coach trips drop off passengers. |

The Hermitage of the Humilladero
Close to Guadalupe, on the road to Navalmoral de la Mata is this wonderful 15th century building. It is a Mudejar shrine with abundant Gothic decoration.

Gastronomy
The local terrain dictates that the specialities on the menu consist of kid and lamb. During the hunting season venison stews are very popular. Black pudding is also a local tradition. The region also offers its own style of cakes and biscuits.
Fiestas
Saint's Day is 3rd February for San Blas and 3rd May for La Cruz's celebration day. Easter is particularly impressive around the monastery. |

You can stay the night in the monastery as there is a two star Hospederia at the back. Idealspain stayed here in September 2010. We found that this hotel in Guadalupe was excellent value for money. Double rooms were just 65 euros per night. Breakfast was available at just 6.50. The hotel offers clean and large rooms in a wonderful setting. There is car parking outside the hotel; drive through the plaza and follow the road around the monastery to get there. The Hospederia Real Monasterio can be contacted on 927 367 000. The address is Plaza Juan Carlos 1, Guadalupe, 10140, Caceres. |
