Places in Spain - Gaucin, Andalucia

Gaucin is not just another of those 'white villages' of southern Spain, this little haven of peace within Andalucia is quite unique. There are over 200 British residents here.

The village of Gaucin boasts a church that has the proportions of a cathedral. Indeed the locals call it a cathedral. Surrounded by stunning countryside and breathtaking views, Gaucin is a perfect day out.

Gaucin

Despite being just 20 miles from the coast of the Costa del Sol, most holiday makers will never see Gaucin and most have never heard of it which is rather a shame. Gaucin is one of 16 white villages that sit in the Serrania de Ronda, a vast expansive valley of lush green vegetation that provides some of the best walks in Andalucia.

The whole area is perfect for walking. The best time to walk the region is late Autumn when the majority of the chestnut (castano) trees start turning bright red. Chestnuts are the main source of income in the area. Another major industry is basket and blind making. This is done using esparto which is found on the high peaks, although this is now a dying trade

 Gaucin Map

There are around 30 artists living in Gaucin and their art is known world-wide. Local villages hold an annual art festival that attracts a lot of interest.

The narrow, shady streets of Gaucin hide small bars and restaurants and there's not a supermarket in sight. The skyline is dominated by the Arabic castle. The Castillo del Aguila is open to the public but opening hours are reported to be a little erratic.
