Within Andalucia,
45km north-east of Jaen lies Baeza with its superb Gothic buildings and cobbled streets. Known as one of the best preserved towns in the whole of Spain, you will find historical buildings scattered throughout the town.
On arrival,
make your first call the tourist office in Plaza del Populo, open Monday
to Friday, 9am-2,30pm and Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm. Here you can
pick up a town plan and a handful of useful information. |
|
If
you enter the town from Jaen, you will approach the main square, Plaza del
Populo from which you can explore the town with ease. Most of the buildings
here are of the 16th century and the tourist office itself is housed in
a good example. If by some chance, the tourist office is closed, cross the
road and the little craft shop will supply you with a free map. The fountain
outside the tourist office is worthy of a mention, with its four lions heads.
It is said to be of Roman origin and to have come from the Roman town of
Cantulo. Further along in Plaza de la Fuente de Santa Maria, you will find
the cathedral, open daily, 10.30am-1pm and 4pm-7pm, admission free. It was
constructed in the 16th century on the site of an earlier mosque. Another
building worthy of a mention is the Palacio de Jabalquinto, in Gothic style,
it houses many interesting items. |

There is
also a museum in the cathedral with a small entry charge. You will find
examples of 16th century clothing, books and paintings. The museum of
Olives in Puente del Obispo is also worth a visit.
If you want
to sample true Andalucian cooking then search out the restaurant by the
name of El Sali where for about 40€ you can have a great meal.
They are closed on Wednesday evenings. You will also find a handful of
Tapas bars to choose from and more than enough bars. For hotels
you may need to travel to Jaen or Ubeda although there are a dozen or
so in Baeza.
