Priego de Cordoba is a relatively small town in the southern part of the Cordoba province of Spain. With a population of just over 22,000 (2008), it is an important centre for tourism and local industry. |

The local economy relies mainly on the production of olive oil and cereals. The olive oil from Priego has been given its own denominational label. The local oil has won numerous awards across the world.

The oldest church in Priego was built in the 13th century but has been restored over the years.There are several important churches in Priego that have some of the finest Andalucian Baroque architecture. The Church of Las Angustias was built in 1773, Church of San Pedro in 1690 and Church of San Juan in 1696. |

The castle in Priego de Cordoba has Moorish origins. The town was once a fortified city with the Hispano-Arabic name Madinat Baguh. The 'Tower of Homage' within the castle has been declared a national monument. The castle dates from the 9th-15th centuries with some later additions. A walk round the castle interior is enlightening. You will see numerous artefacts illustrating the history of the castle including some stone catapult balls from the 14th and 15th century. |

The oldest part of Priego is the Barrio de la Villa (Arab Quarter). Its narrow, winding streets are a pleasure to explore and are a photographers paradise. Look out for St. Antonio Square which has some beautiful white houses, adorned with pots of colourful flowers.
The Balcon del Adave is a cliff edge that forms a natural balcony, overlooking the countryside. It used to form part of the city defences.
The Carnicerias Reales (Royal Market) is one of the most outstnding features of the town. It is a former slaughterhouse. Inside you will find a superb spiral staircase and galleried patio. The design is attributed to the Italian archetect, Francisco del Castillo. The grey-blue limestone used in its construction came from quarries in nearby Alcaudete. |

The Fuente del Rey (King's fountain) is without any doubt the most important, emblematic feature in Priego. It is made up of three pools and surrounded by 139 fountain heads that offer a constant supply of water. In the same square is the Fuente de Salud (Fountain of health). |

There are five museums in Priego de Cordoba, including the Museo-Casa Natal, Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the painter Adolfo Losano Sidro. |

The religious brotherhoods of Priego date back to the 16th century and their displays of passion during Easter Week are known throughout Spain.
