Gandia is located on the east coast of Spain, along the coastal stretch known as the Costa Blanca.

Getting to Gandia

Gandia is best accessed via the AP7 (E15) highway that runs from Valencia to Alicante. The N332 runs slightly nearer the coast from Oliva in the south and is a very good road. The N332 should be adequate to get you to Gandia.

What to see in Gandia  

The Museu Arqueologic de Gandia

One of the best known museums in the area. Located in C/Hospital, themuseum is open 10am-2pm and 3pm-7pm Tuesday-Saturday. Sundays, 10am-2pm. In July and Agust the opening time is extended to 9pm. Entry is 2€ and 1€. On Sundays and public holidays, entry is free.

 

 

The Palau Ducal dels Borja

This impressive building located on C/Duc Alfons el Vell makes for an interesting visit. It was once the Royal Dukes of Aragon's main residence. The building dates from around 1510. Open from 10am-1.30pm and 3pm-6.30pm, open an hour longer in summer. Entry is 6€ with reductions for pensioners.

The Town Hall

The original Town Hall building located in the Placa Major was built in 1778 during the reign of Carlos III but alas only the front remains. The building was totally reformed, keeping the front, in 1982. The three Roman arches form an impressive picture.

The Church of Santa Maria

(Iglesia Colegiata Santa Maria)

This is a fine example of Catalan-Aragonese Gothic style. Although the structure is somewhat plain, the interior was once highly decorated with valuable paintings and works of art. Sadly these all disappeared during the Spanish Civil War, as did the choir stalls.

The church was built over several centuries, starting in the 14th. The church has Collegiate status.

The Church of Sant Josep

dating from the 13th century, this church stands on the site of a former mosque in the Ravel (Moorish) area of Gandia.

The Antigua University

This can be found in the Placa Escola Pia and has a group of fine bronzes outside in the plaza in front. This is one of many universities in Gandia.

 

The new university is a very modern building.

Once you arrive in the centre, the streets are wonderful to wander. There are lots of monuments dotted around and a few nice park areas. The main plazas (placas) are great places to sit and rest.

Beaches in Gandia

There are some wonderful beaches in Gandia. Platja de Gandia is the largest. The beaches are located in the area of Grau. There's a small leisure marina and a port.


Getting around Gandia

Parking in the centre, opposite the tourist office and near the railways station costs 1.60€ for one hour. Pay the attendant on arrival.

There is an excellent bus service running aroung Gandia as well as buses to other major towns and cities.

 

The bus station is located next to the Parc de l'Estacio and close to the rail station.

The post office (Oficina de Correus) is located in C/San Francesc de Borja.


Shopping in Gandia

La Vital is a modern shopping complex in Gandia. The two floors provide a wide range of shops, open 10am - 10pm, Monday to Saturday. There is free parking on site on certain days. La Vital is located on Cami de la Torre dels Pares just a short drive from the main Valencia-Alicante road. Services within the centre include, toilets, baby changing rooms, cycle parking, cine tickets, ATM, public telephones and lifts. More info: www.lavital.es or tel 962 881 070.

 

The centre of Gandia is a wonderful place to shop. There are a couple of pedestrianised streets, lined with shops. Smaller side streets lead off in all directions, each having a unique range of shops, interspersed with cafes and restaurants. The best shopping streets are Carrer Sant Francesc de Borja and Carrer Major.


The climate in Gandia

Gandia has a warm and temperate climate with an average annual temperature of around 20° centigrade. Temperatures generally range from a low of around 5° C in the winter to a high of around 40° C in the summer months. You can expect to see over 300 days of sunshine each year. The beautiful Gandia weather is one reason why it has become such a popular place for North Europeans buying a holiday home or even a new home in the sun.

Side-steps from Gandia

You could visit the Cabo de Gata National Park or 9km away, the Monasterio de San Jeronimo de Cotalba.

Follow the N337 to the area of El Grau where you will find the Port of Gandia. A train runs to here from Gandia centre.

 

A few kilometers away you will find the town of Daimus.

 

If you like history then why not follow the Ruta dels Monestirs, which takes in several local monasteries and convents. The 90km round trip takes you through stunning countryside.
