Burgos
province
is
located
in
northern
Spain,
just
below
Cantabria.
The
province
forms
part
of
Castile
and
Leon.
The
province
covers
and
area
of
around
14,300
square
kilometres
and
has a
population
of
around
3.5
million
people.
The
most
important
rivers
in the
province
are
the
Ebro
and
the
Duero.
The
River
Duero
is
bordered
by
fine
vineyards
that
produce
some
of the
nicest
wines
in
Spain.

Burgos
has

173,600
inhabitants
and
another
10,000
in its
suburbs.
It is
the
capital
city
of the
province
of
Burgos.
For
tourists
visiting
the
city
there
is a
wealth
of
historic
monuments
such
as the
Church
of
Santa
Agueda,
Burgos
Cathedral
and
the
monastery
de las
Huelgas.

Burgos
still
possesses
more
ecclesiastical
monuments
than
any
other
Spanish
city.
The
three
most
outstanding
and
worthy
of
exploring
are
the
cathedral,
with
its
chapel
of the
Condestables
de
Castilla,
the
monastery
of Las
Huelgas
and
the
Carthusian
monastery
of
Miraflores.
The
cathedral
treasury,
the
monastery
of Las
Huelgas
and
the
Carthusian
monastery
of
Miraflores,
are
museums
of
extreme
value.
Other
churches
include:
San
Esteban,
San
Gil (Sancti
Aegidii),
San
Pedro,
San
Cosme
y San
Damian,
Santiago
(Sancti
Jacobi),
San
Lorenzo
and
San
Lesmes
(Adelelmi).
The
Convento
de la
Merced,
occupied
by the
Jesuits,
and
the
Hospital
del
Rey
are
also
worthy
of a
visit.
In the
walls
of the
city
is the
famous
gateway
of
Santa
María,
erected
for
the
first
entrance
of the
Emperor
Charles
V, and
the
arch
of
Fernán
González.

Fiestas
in
Burgos
During
Easter
Week
there
are
processions
of
great
solemnity,
specially
on
Good
Friday.
Corpus
Christi:
In the
Monastery
of
"Las
Huelgas"
there
is a
celebration
for
the
victory
against
the
Moors
(1212),
followed
by a
procession
of
"Curpillos"
the
next
day.
The
most
interesting
event
is
perhaps
the
"Fiesta
de San
Juan
del
Monte"
in
"Miranda
del
Ebro",
with
spectacular
processions
in
traditional
outfit,
including
beautifully
decorated
horse
coaches.
In
Fuentelcésped
takes
place
the
"Danza
de los
Palos"
on
13th
of
June,
a
traditional
festival
with
picturesque
dresses.
On
29th
of
June
starts
of
series
of
"Fiestas"
in
Burgos,
continuing
the
following
days
and
including
bullfights
and
folkloristic
exhibitions.
On
5th
of
August
there
is a
unique
spectacle
in
Espinosa
de los
Monteros:
an
archaic
war-dance
of
pagan
ritual.
On
8th
of
September
is
celebrated
the
traditional
Moorish
dance
"Canta
la
Mora"
in
Peñaranda
del
Duero,
and on
12th
of
September
takes
place
a
beautiful
"Desfile
de
Carrozas"
, a
parade
of
horse
coaches,
in
Miranda
del
Duero.

The
cathedral
in
Burgos
is a
designated
UNESCO
heritage
site.
Our
Lady
of
Burgos
was
begun
in the
13th
century
at the
same
time
as the
great
cathedrals
of the
Ile-de-France
and
was
completed
in the
15th
and
16th
centuries.
The
entire
history
of
Gothic
art is
summed
up in
its
superb
architecture
and
its
unique
collection
of
works
of
art,
including
paintings,
choir
stalls,
reredos,
tombs
and
stained-glass
windows
