Places in Spain - El Cartujano Horse Show, Mijas Costa, Andalucia
Andalucian horses are known worldwide for their abilities and special characteristics. Andalucia produces some of the finest horses in the world and some of their abilities are unique. |
Very close to Fuengirola, in Mijas Costa, there is a small but well organised establishment that gives you the opportunity to see Andalucian horses at their best. El Cartujano Horse Shows have been established for many years and are always entertaining. |
The shows are staged between 6th April and 10th October, every Thursday night, starting at 6pm. The show lasts around 90 minutes. |

Idealspain visited El Cartujano in 2005 and again in 2010. The show is staged in a small, round, outdoor arena with a fine sand base. There is concrete seating on several tiers around the arena. |
When choosing your seat, bear in mind the position of the sun. You do not want to be facing the sun if possible. At 6pm, the sun is to the right of the arena (over the mountains). Try to sit to the right of the presidents box for the best views, or as close to the presidents box as possible. A drink is included in the entrance price but feel free to take more drinks with you, especially for the children. |
The show features a wide selection of Andalucian horses, performing individually and in teams. The riders wear traditional Andalucian costumes. |
You will see how Andalucian horses have been trained to walk; their unique style of throwing their feet out as they walk. Another unique style is kicking out whilst jumping in the air. |
El Cartujano offers several packages: The horse show only, horse show and dinner with flamenco show or just the dinner and flamenco show. There's free coaches from many local hotels. You can book tickets at your hotel. |
If you want to make your own way to El Cartujano, use the Coin road (through the industrial estate) and turn right before the golf course. Or, from the N340, take the junction near McDonalds (km 210), pass Mercadona and turn left at the second roundabout. There is a signpost but it is a very small one so drive slowly. Follow the road for a few minutes and El Cartujano is on your right.

Idealspain Opinion
We think that El Cartujano is an excellent place to see Andalucian horses and represents excellent value for money.
The show is just of the right length, even for children and a tour of the stables after the show is a must if you like horses. The performers are of a high standard and well presented. |
