I’m always excited when a new book arrives at Idealspain for review yet often disappointed when it turns out to be similar to the last one. When ‘The sun struck upwards’ by Luke Darracott arrived on the doorstep I had already made a conscious decision to give up on the book if I hadn’t been hooked by the end of the first chapter. Needless to say, I spent the next seven nights enthralled by its pages and thoroughly enjoyed touring Spain with this young, talented writer.
The idea seemed to be a simple one; to visit 15 of Spain’s regions, one after another. The author used public transport to undertake his travels which was an experience in itself and as I expected, he found each region to be so different from the last.
Having seen all of Spain, including many of the places he writes about, I found it very easy to relate to his experiences. I didn’t have to get far into the book to appreciate that the author had youth on his side. His experiences and actions gave away his age, yet, he writes in a mature and very descriptive manner.
There’s no storyline as such to this book. It is a travelogue of his journey through Spain. For any reader who enjoys Spain, the book will be an interesting read. For those who enjoy adventure, it may seem a little tame. I found the book somewhat addictive and couldn’t wait to see where he was going next.
His method of writing illustrates perfectly, the beauty of Spain and in particular, the Spanish people and their ability to make people feel welcome and their pride in their country.
Idealspain would highly recommend ‘The Sun Struck Upwards ‘ to all our readers who have an interest in Spain.
